Just a bunny
Fri, 07 Mar 2025
I've made a policy to not build my business on intellectual property I didn't own, because it's simply too risky. The more successful it is, the more likely it is to be noticed and taken away (at best - a really annoyed IP holder can go for damages). I've made a few fan works, but generally it's been an add-on to an existing design (like the Luna face for the Kawaii Cat) or a freebie. Those can still attract damages but it's pretty unlikely.
The Sugar Bunny, March tier reward, both is and isn't a divergence from that policy. The cover images are pretty much the famous Easter candies; they're not hidden as bonus designs. But even if I got a C&D and had to remove the Sugar Chick altogether, removing the contour designs and simpler face from Sugar Bunny still leaves a pretty complete design: a simple bunny silhouette with a wider variety of decorations and options than the average charm-level design.
But on another level it is a change in policy: acknowledging the reality that the basic $3/month tier reward isn't the basis of the business and is unlikely to ever become so. This gives me a lot more freedom to do designs that might be a little riskier, takedown-wise.
This doesn't mean I'm going to become Yet Another Pokemon Design Site, of course. If nothing else, any fandom I choose is going to exclude members who don't have an interest in it, so it will have to be something versatile like Sugar Bunny, that has application outside of the IP-specific design. But if you've ever gone "gee, I wish Karen would do Eagles instead of just eagles," now is your chance to put in a request.
(Okay no, while everybody seems to be on the bandwagon this year, that's probably still not universal-appeal enough to make it the main monthly design.)
Anyway, in addition to the Sugar Bunny (and bonus Chick), I've got a couple of additions to the Shamrock. Both Noto and Twemoji emoji are SVGs with permissive licenses, so I've converted a couple - Noto this time - to add snap tabs/felties. You can make a feltie pin to wear on St. Paddy's Day, or a Lucky Clover snap tab to carry every day, or any of the other permutations.
