Variations on a Lemon

Fri, 19 Jan 2024

I've been coding again, which makes for poorer visuals in the ol' blog entries, sorry.

If you're familiar with my designs that involve variations, you know they often involve a lot of skipping colors. And I'm not happiest with that, so I am experimenting with doing something about that. It trades lots-of-layers for lots-of-files. I avoided this for a long time, because it's such a lot of work at my end. First I have to save each variation, and then if I change the base file I have to RE-save each varation.

But there are Perl libraries to manipulate XML files, which is all SVG files are, and Ink/Stitch can be called from the command line. So I took this week to write some utilities that will let me create one SVG file and blow it up into, for example, a file for each letter of the alphabet. Or each variation on a head shape - someday soon I'll go back and revise the beanie dragon into a cleaner format.

(I kind of regret naming the beanie dragon so generically; its official name is the In-The-Hoop Plush Dragon. And it's time to finally start releasing some of my other plush dragon designs, here in the Year of the Dragon.)
